Shopify vs. headless for brands doing under ₹5 Cr / year
Headless sounds sophisticated. For most sub-₹5 Cr brands it is a tax on your roadmap. Here is the honest breakdown.

Ampex Web
Every year we get a handful of founders asking us to rebuild their Shopify store as a headless Next.js front-end. Most of them do not need it. A few of them absolutely do. The difference is not revenue — it is roadmap.
When Shopify's default stack is the right answer
If your differentiation is product, brand, and merchandising — not on-page UX invention — the stock Shopify theme layer will out-ship anything custom for the next eighteen months. You get checkout, apps, and Shop Pay for free.
When headless earns its keep
- You need a bespoke product configurator that Shopify sections cannot express
- Your catalog lives in an ERP and Shopify is only the checkout
- You are running content and commerce on the same domain with heavy editorial
Everyone else: stay on Shopify, invest the saved engineering budget in CRO and retention.
